From modest beginnings as Manhattan musical plays to the current Mega-Musicals performed world-wide to an audience of millions, they've made us laugh, cry and danced their way in to our hearts. The Broadway musical entertained the troops as they left to fight World Wars, and welcomed them back in victory. For over a century, the musical has reinvented itself, reaching wider audiences through international tours and major motion picture interpretations. Whether with touching sincerity or the grandeur of spectacle, the Broadway musical has become a part of our lives.

And then there are the timeless songs of Broadway, the ones we left the theatre singing. These songs have stood the test of time, crossing over from their original settings, first on the Hit Parade and later as Popular Standards performed in ways the songwriters could not have imagined. Kern, Berlin, Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers and their descendants such as Sondheim and Lloyd Webber reached out through their music to a widely varied audience...and each music genre gave us their own unique interpretation of the music.

In 2002 we celebrate the 100th birthday of Richard Rodgers, who gave us Popular Standards such as "My Funny Valentine", "Blue Moon", "The Lady is a Tramp" and countless others created from musicals like "The Boys of Syracuse", "Babes in Arms", and "Pal Joey". These songs became standards in the worlds of Swing, Jazz and Cabaret. This season we recognize the achievement of Richard Rodgers and focus on many of his best known works.

BroadwayCabaret/BroadwayJazz brings together three styles of Canadian musicians. Vocalists Kevin Power & Sheri Somerville along with jazz pianist Richard Whiteman provide a unique journey of the Broadway musical. BroadwayCabaret/BroadwayJazz is packed with energy, class and humour ...and of course, you'll leave the theatre singing - in the style of your choice!

Richard Whiteman has been a vital part of the Toronto jazz scene since the mid-eighties. From classical piano studies at the age of eight, to a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto, Richard's jazz influence came from radio as well as regular visits to Toronto' s legendary Bourbon Street. Jazz greats like Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Scott Hamilton and Ed Bickert made great impressions on Richard. He has worked with leading jazz figures such as Dave Holland, Don Thompson, Kenny Wheeler and Muhal Richard Abrams. As a professional pianist Richard's wide-ranging skills have been heard in such diverse contexts as his own mainstream piano trios, Al Henderson's powerful Quintet and as an accompanist to many jazz/cabaret vocalists such as John Alcorn, Jackie Richardson, and Molly Johnson. Richard has released three recordings: This is Now and Grooveyard, both on Counterpoint Records, and Avenue Rhodes on Cornerstone Records.

"tidy, cogent, always swinging" Katie Malloch of CBC Jazz Beat

"Richard is a fine mainstream pianist whose style recalls Osacar Peterson with some touches of Bill Evans" Coda Magazine

REVIEW

"Broadway Cabaret/Broadway Jazz hits the right note. Somerville and Power have strong, rich voices. Not only are they excellent at what they do, they were clearly having a good time too. As for Whiteman, he more than demonstrated why he is a vital part of the Toronto jazz scene. His accompaniment frequently garnered mid-song applause. The encore was a perfect ending to and enjoyable show." The Daily Gleaner, Fredericton NB (Fredericton Playhouse review)
